Life

Alexander of House of Schönburg is the son of Joachim, Count von Schönburg-Glauchau, and Beatrix, Countess Széchenyi de Sárvár-Felsővidék. His siblings are Gloria, Princess of Thurn and Taxis, also known as Princess TNT (b. 1960), Maya Flick (b. 1958),[1] and Carl-Alban of Schönburg (born 2 February 1966 - Lomé, Togo),[2] as well as Anabel Maya-Felicitas, from his father's second marriage, to Ursula Zwicker. Since the death of his father in 1998, he has been the head of the comital branch of the former sovereign aristocratic house of Schönburg. As such, he is entitled to the predicate Illustrious Highness.

His father's profession as a journalist and foreign correspondent took the family to Togo and later to Somalia, from 1965-1970. The family returned to Germany in 1970, and resided in Meckenheim, in the Rhineland. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, his father reclaimed the family's possessions in Saxony.

Marriage and children

On 30 April 1999 (civil) Alexander Count of Schönburg-Glauchau married Irina Verena, Princess of Hessen (b. 1971, Munich, Bavaria), granddaughter of Prince Christoph of Hesse and great-niece of Queen Elizabeth II, in Berlin. They were married religiously at Heusenstmm on 29 May 1999 They have three children:

Although they are direct descendants of Queen Victoria (as great-great-grandchildren of Princess Margaret of Prussia, landgravine of Hesse, who was the youngest daughter of the Empress Frederick), their children were excluded from the Succession to the British throne because they are Roman Catholic.

Activities as journalist and writer

By 1999, Alexander von Schönburg was widely known as a member of one of the so-called popular culture quintuplets, with Christian Kracht, Eckhart Nickel, Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre and Joachim Bessing. In addition, he was also free lance journalist, with publications in Esquire, Die Zeit, and Die Weltwoche. He landed a best seller in 2005 with The art of the stylish impoverished, in which he discussed the lessons of 500 years of decadence.[3]

Alexander von Schönburg was Editor in Chief of Park Avenue in 2005. In 2006, he relinquished this position, and was replaced by Andreas Petzold.[4] He continues his activities as a journalist, as a columnist and German correspondent for Vanity Fair and the Bild-Zeitung and as a free-lance writer for the Swiss periodical Weltwoche. His writing is characterized by an irreverent wit.[5]
